👋 Hi Bocceverse!

Tony here to introduce a new BocceLabs feature!

I wanted this new feature for my Ohio Bocce League (go Cleveland Hellhounds!), so I coded it up last week.

Bocce Player Grades

Bocce Labs Player Grade

Starting today, every BocceLabs player with at least two games on record will see a letter grade — A, B, C, or D — displayed as a badge on their player card and profile.

But this isn't just a letter slapped on your page. Tap the badge and you'll open a full Player Grade Report that breaks down your performance, highlights what you're doing well, and tells you exactly how to improve.

Pssst!

💻 We’re pouring money into technology. Think: servers, databases, cloud infrastructure, iPads, and laptops.

We’re pouring our time and energy into this effort. Think: about 120+hrs a week among planning, coding, bug fixing, and collecting data (huge shout out to the statskeepers team who run on occasional 🌮 Taco Bell and 🍕 pizza deliveries).

Pour us a beer?

We appreciate your support!

How it works

Your grade is calculated from three core stats, each weighted by importance:

Stat

Weight

What It Measures

± Per Frame

40%

How consistently you win frames, normalized to a 0–100 scale

Roll %

30%

Your pointing accuracy — how often your lag shots land

Shot %

30%

Your shooting accuracy — how often you hit your target

These three numbers are combined into a single overall score:

Score = (±norm × 0.4) + (Roll% × 0.3) + (Shot% × 0.3)

That score maps to a letter grade:

Grade

Score

Level

A

65+

Elite

B

45–64

Above Average

C

30–44

Average

D

< 30

Developing

A grades get special treatment — the badge features a spinning Italian flag ring with a gold holographic face and a light-sweep animation. Because if you've earned it, you should see it.

Your Report Card

Clicking your badge opens a detailed report with four sections:

Score Breakdown

Three animated progress bars:

  • Amber for ±/frame

  • Green for rolls

  • Purple for shots

…show each stat's value and how many points it contributes to your grade. You'll immediately see which stat is carrying you and which one is dragging you down.

Grading Scale

A compact reference showing all four grade tiers with your current grade highlighted, so you can see exactly how close you are to the next level.

Strengths & Weaknesses

The report analyzes your three stats and generates tags automatically:

  • Above 80? You'll see "Elite Roll %" or "Elite Shot %"

  • Above 60? "Strong ± Per Frame"

  • Below 40? "Shot % needs work"

  • All three stats within 15 points of each other? "Well-rounded player"

No guesswork! Just a clear picture of your game.

How to Improve

This is where it gets actionable. For every stat below 75, the report generates a personalized tip card with specific practice advice:

  • "Practice lag shots to consistently place the ball near the pallino. Work on distance control and line accuracy during warmups."

  • "Dedicate practice time to hitting target balls. Start with close-range shots and gradually increase distance as you build accuracy."

  • "Focus on winning more frames consistently. Work on both pointing and shooting to control more frames."

If all your stats are already strong, you'll see a "Keep it up!" card instead. You've earned the praise.

Designed for Every Screen

Player Grade Mobile

On your phone, the report stacks vertically for easy scrolling. On a desktop or tablet, it expands into a wider layout — your grade badge and score breakdown sit side by side, the grading scale and strengths appear in two columns, and the improvement tips span the full width below. Everything fits without scrolling.

The badge itself also adapts: it comes in small, standard, and large sizes depending on where it appears.

Works Everywhere

You'll find your grade badge in three places:

  1. Player Cards: the quick-view cards throughout the app

  2. Player Profile Pages: front and center on your profile

  3. Stats Modal: when viewing detailed career statistics

Tap the badge in any of those spots and you'll get the same full Grade Report with your latest data.

Light & Dark Mode

The entire grade system — badge, modal, progress bars, tags, tip cards — is fully themed for both light and dark mode. Everything adjusts automatically based on your preference.

Save money on Airfare?

Quick plug from Dave: In July, I planned a trip to Cancun for January. I tracked my flight with Airfare Butler. As shown, I paid about $600 bucks for the flight. When it dropped to $490 a month later, I rebooked and pocketed the change to spend on 🍹 margaritas! How? See below.

Did you know that 40% of flights drop in price after you buy them?

Is yours one of them?

Airfare Butler watches your flight for you. If it drops, they alert you, you rebook, and you keep the points or dollars.

Simply forward your airfare invoice to [email protected] (tell them BocceLabs sent you) and the butler service tracks your flight.

Stress less, travel more, keep the change

What's Next at BocceLabs?

Player Grades are just the beginning. This is the foundation for deeper performance analytics. Think grade trends over time, grade comparisons between teammates, and league-wide grade distributions.

But for now, go check your grade. You might be surprised.
